Eric Gagne is back.
The Brewers just announced that Gagne signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring camp. Doug Melvin told us the other day that agent Scott Boras had called about a job for Gagne but Melvin didn't seem that interested.
Obviously, this is a big difference from the Gagne signing of December 2007. Then, he was given a $10 million deal to be the team's closer. Now, he's getting a minor league deal, probably loaded with incentives. As soon as I get the terms, I'll pass them along.
Gagne will be given a chance to win a job as a set-up pitcher even though the Brewers seemed OK in that department. Perhaps they wanted another reliever after losing Luis Pena on waivers to Seattle.
Gagne, 33, quickly pitched himself out of the closer's role last season with an awful start. He later was shut down with shoulder problems before returning to set up new closer Salomon Torres, who later retired. In 50 appearances, Gagne was 4-3 with a 5.44 ERA, with 10 saves in 17 chances.

One thing going for us...Now, the Brewers are entrusting the ninth inning to Trevor Hoffman. I guess it never hurts to have veteran arms in camp. And, unlike last year, the financial risk will be minimal.
